Tuck-pointing
Exposed brick above the roof more times than not, needs some sort of repair. Because of its location it takes more damage from weather and temperature changes. Unless the brick is going to fall over, tuck pointing is the best solution.
Anywhere mortar is exposed to large amounts of water and snow over time, it will deteriorate. Garage and entry doors are a prime location this happens to.
Snow drifts and piles next to foundations and melts. This damages the mortar over time and should be repaired to maintain its integrity.

Complete Tear Down
Sometimes the brick is not worth saving or laying back up. In those cases, relining a flue and just having a stack is the best option.
